In less than 24 hours, I’m heading to Vegas for March Madness. Woohoo! Ruther and I will be shredding down the highway, turnt on edibles ala Hunter S Thompson, and his freak sidekick. What a time, and what a place. Degenerates from across the country will be betting their mortgage and kids college funds on some 19 year old kid in a pair of shorts. Bless you Vegas. In the words of Bart Scott: “Can’t Wait!”
Well, despite the hi-jinks and hopefully funny snaps and Instagram stories we produce, I want to win some dough. Here are some tips for betting and your brackets. And remember dirtballs, I am not an expert. That’s why they call me Matty Mush.
STICK WITH THE HOT TEAMS AND BIG PROGRAMS
Certain teams are peaking, and getting better. Duke, really has the most talent coming into this tournament. They just beat Louisville, North Carolina, and Notre Dame in three days. With Coach K being out mid-season and the Grayson Allen tripping trilogy, it looked like Duke was headed for a sub-par season. But they’ve put everything together and the emergence of their 3 freshman and the improved play of Luke Kennard, love em or hate em, they will go far.
I also really like what Michigan has done. Derrick Walton Jr. is Michigan’s reckless point guard. But through the Big Ten tournament his game was so under control. He was making great passes and shooting threes. And after this tournament, DJ Wilson will be a household name. At 6-10, he can play inside and outside, and he keeps getting better. They have a tough draw playing Oklahoma St. and Louisville in the first two rounds. But I believe they are peaking and will get through.
I also believe Michigan St. has a great chance to beat Kansas in the second round. Miles Bridges is a definite pro prospect that can take over a game. Kansas doesn’t play a lot of players, and the whole Josh Jackson situation is an absolute mess. Also, throughout the season KU needed furious comebacks just to win numerous games. I think that will come to a head sometime in this tournament. I don’t see them going that deep. Perhaps Michigan State knocks them off.
STAY AWAY FROM BIG TIME SOUTHERN FOOTBALL SCHOOLS
Schools like Miami, Florida St, and South Carolina never seem to take the next step in this tournament. I see that happening again this year. The only team I give a chance to make it to the sweet 16 is Florida St., only because they have an easy draw. But for Miami, and South Carolina its one and done.
NOTRE DAME WILL BEAT GONZAGA
Sorry Scibelli. Notre Dame is starting to peak. They are also made of veterans and seniors who have tons of tournament experience. They just played Duke to the final bell last Saturday for the ACC championship. They will not be intimidated by Gonzaga. And Gonzaga hasn’t played a team this good in a long time. This is where it all ends. You lost Scibelli. Now go dress up like Adam Morrison. A guy you never heard of.
Here is a moneyline pick, I am excited about. Rhode Island will beat Creighton. And after this tourney Danny Hurley will get a big time job.
Middle Tennessee St. over Minnesota. MTSU beat a loaded Michigan St. team last year, and a lot say they are a better team this year. The experts don’t even see this as an upset because MTSU is favored by 1 point. Probably the only time in history a 12 seed is favorited over a 5.
Kent St. over UCLA? You might think I am crazy. Everyone is up Lonzo Ball’s ass as the next Magic Johnson type franchise player. If you watched any of the PAC 12 tourney, you heard our hero Bill Walton slurp him up pretty good. But Steve Alford is a terrible tournament coach. This team has so much talent and plays sloppy. And now with Lonzo’s dad saying he wants his son to have a billion dollar shoe contract, this breeds bad karma and the perfect way for UCLA’s season to end. The crazy thing is the team has Duke talent, but when you watch them they are extremely frustrating in their sloppiness. I can see them getting knocked off early. They definitely won’t get past the Sweet 16.
Not exactly a sleeper, but I think SMU beats Baylor in the second round. Baylor is one of the most overrated teams in the most overrated conference. Its too bad SMU has Duke in the second round because they could make the final four with the right draw.
MY FINAL FOUR PREDICTIONS AND CHAMPION.
DUKE, NOTRE DAME, NORTH CAROLINA, MICHIGAN
DUKE BEATS MICHIGAN IN THE FINAL.
Hope this helps everyone. Enjoy the games and enjoy the funny videos me and Ruther will be giving you from Vegas. The trip will be epic. Fam out.
